“For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another”

One of the things I love about the Point is that there are so many opportunities to serve that it is easy to find something that works for you. Personally, I have found my serving niche as part of the Set-Up Dream Team. This means I get to church on Sunday mornings at 7:00am, and honestly – I love it (and I’m not particularly a morning person either).
Sure, don’t get me wrong, there are some weeks (okay most weeks) when my alarm goes off on Sunday morning, and it’s a real struggle to get out of bed. The temptation to continue hitting snooze is almost overwhelming. What ultimately gets me out of bed on those mornings is one of the reasons why I serve: it helps me to practice being faithful in the little things. This is a topic Pastor Gabe hits on quite often, so it has been resonating with me over the past few months. Instead of always expecting God to work in our lives in big dramatic ways, we first have to learn to be faithful in the everyday, little things. Getting up early on Sunday mornings, especially the Sundays where I don’t feel like it, is just one way that I can live this out.
Another reason I serve is for the opportunity it gives me to build relationships with fellow believers. Through my Dream Team experience at the Point, I have met and built relationships with people I would not have met if I were just coming to service on Sundays. It has been so enriching to my personal walk with the Lord to be around other believers.
Also, something really cool happens when you start getting involved in the work that the Lord is doing around you – you get to be a part of something bigger than yourself. This brings me to the final reason I serve: it reminds me that in the end it is not about me. I am human. I am imperfect. I have flaws. But ultimately, none of that matters when I come and lay my efforts at the feet of Jesus through service. It gives me the freedom to forget about myself and my imperfections and just focus on serving the Lord. He takes my unique skills, gifts, and personality, and He couples them with the work of fellow believers who have done the same. He magnifies our efforts to achieve things far greater than I could ever hope to accomplish through my own effort alone. To be a part of that and see it unfolding around me is so much more powerful than any extra hour of sleep on a Sunday morning could ever be.
Prayer
Lord, I thank you for the opportunity to live for something greater than myself. I pray that you would help me to humbly and faithfully present my efforts to you Lord so that you can use them for your glory. Amen
