The Power of Being Thankful

Scripture Readings: “But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy…” (2 Tim. 3:1-2)

“My soul, praise the LORD, and do not forget all His benefits.” (Psalm 103:2)

Billy Graham said, “Even when life may be difficult, we should thank God for all He does for us – which we do not deserve.” We know too well how difficult days provide ample opportunity to overlook God’s generosity. If concerns become the track our minds ride day after day, news cycle after news cycle, it’s near impossible to shift direction. In fact, our fear and pride direct that very train of thought.

In his letter to Timothy, Paul shares that people will grow increasingly unthankful in the darkest of days. Like an expert marksman, he nails what is common to all of us – forgetfulness of God’s perfect gifts. Wouldn’t you agree it’s hard to be thankful for something you don’t remember? As a result, this habit of fretting and forgetting fills our souls with darkness. Scripture encourages us to push against these run-away thoughts by remembering God’s goodness. “I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.” (Psalm 9:1) Remembering captivates our hearts with thankfulness and joy.

As we celebrate with thanksgiving this season, intentionally recall and notice God’s goodness toward you. One simple way is to pay attention to the details of your moments. “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” (James 1:17) Every moment can be an encounter with God’s goodness. Beauty, ability, provision, any sense of peace and security, any encouragement or glimmer of the Lord Jesus Christ’s character is a good gift meant for you and worthy of recognition. When you thank God anxiety diminishes, discontent decreases, and the presence of the Holy Spirit is evident; not to mention the energizing effect gratitude has on those around us.

In closing, be encouraged by the gorgeous truth that generosity is an unchangeable trait of your Heavenly Father. He will always give you good gifts. You will always have thanks to give Him. Remembering God’s blessings and having a thankful heart will bring light to your darkest days. “It is good to give thanks to the LORD…” (Ps. 92:1a)

“Heavenly Father, thank You for Your generosity.  Please help me to remember Your constant goodness. I’m so thankful to be the recipient of Your good gifts. It is in Jesus Christ’s generously given name that I pray. Amen.”
