Hearing God

Scripture:

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27)

Reading:

Between the wailing toddler and the chatting employees folding shirts, I heard my mom. It was a bustling weekend at Costco. Shopping carts maneuvered the tight lanes between the clothing tables. At the time, I was focused on the latest activewear, while Thin Mint Bites were calling my name.

Then I heard it. “Kristin.” My mom’s voice.

I could not see where she was, but the moment I heard her, my attention shifted. I did not need to see her to know it was my mom. She was somewhere in the distance. Her voice small and indistinct to my neighbors, but unmistakable to me. Why? Because I am her child.

I followed the impression the sound of her voice made, weaving through shoppers and squeezing past the sweater table until I saw her. She was standing still, her happy eyes fixed on me.

In the same way, as God’s children, we recognize the voice of our Good Shepherd even in the middle of life’s noise. Not because it is the loudest, but because it is His voice. Concise. Kind. Personal. When we stop striving and start resting as His beloved, we begin to hear His still, small voice more clearly.

Jesus said, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27)

The moment we place our trust in Jesus for salvation, something beautiful happens. We become part of His family. He knows us, and we learn to know Him by the Word of God and the Spirit of God. His voice rises above the chaos, not through volume, but through relationship.

Remember Jesus also said, “Everyone the Father gives me will come to me, and the one who comes to me I will never cast out.” (John 6:37)

If you have come to Him by faith, you have entered into something more than belief. You have stepped into a living, loving, lasting relationship with the Son of God. And through this relationship, He has equipped you to hear His voice. Be aware of Him. He is your Good Shepherd, the One who laid down His life for you. Trust Him. Follow Him. He knows the way.

Your Turn:

1. What promises does Jesus make to His followers in John 10:27?

2. It takes faith to follow the voice of God. Consider this verse. How does it encourage you to persevere with faith? “Since, then, we have such a hope, we act with great boldness.” (2 Corinthians 3:12)

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, I am so grateful that You are my Good Shepherd. I want Your voice to be the most recognizable voice to me – above all others. Please give me grace to listen and follow You in increasing measure. Amen.
