Scripture:
“Rest in God alone, my soul, for my hope comes from him.” (Psalm 62:5 CSB)
Reading:
I have lost count the number of times I have asked my kids to pick up their rooms. Have you been there too? We know that there is something to putting our stuff in its proper place that instantly brings peace. The same is true for thoughts that run amuck, tangling our emotions.
That is when you need to put your soul to rest, tucked safely into your Lord’s presence - its rightful place.
David reminded himself (and us), “Rest in God alone, my soul, for my hope comes from him.” (Psalm 62:5)
David wrote this while he and his exhausted people fled for their lives (see 2 Samuel 17:29). Instead of spiraling into anxiety, he chose to direct his mind and heart to rest in God, reliant on His faithful care.
Like a sword resting in its sheath, David placed his soul where it belonged. His hope was grounded on substantial evidence: the promises of scripture, the testimony of God’s people, and his own relationship with God. David knew and trusted God’s character.
You and I can do the same, even when relationships, responsibilities, and news headlines are chaotic.
God is faithful even when we are faithless (2 Timothy 2:13). That is who He is! The Lord will never abandon you nor forsake you. He is with you, and His desire is to do good for you (Jeremiah 29:11-13).
C.S. Lewis once wrote, “He who has God and everything else has no more than he who has God only.”
The Lord is breathing room for your soul. In quiet, allow God to furnish your expectations with His promises. Hope will come, and His hope will not disappoint (Romans 5:5).
Your Turn:
1. When your soul is anxious, picture yourself like a child climbing into the arms of Jesus. He said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
2. Take intentional time to be still before God. Turn down the noise. Meditate on a promise like 1 Peter 5:7, “Cast all your cares on Him, because He cares for you.” Surrender your fears, your future, and your family into His faithful hands.
Prayer:
Lord God, I come to You and want to rest in the assurance of Your promises, power, and presence. You are the Source of my hope. With thankfulness and expectation, I trust You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
