Scripture:
“The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are protected.” (Proverbs 18:10)
Reading:
The sea spray stung my face, and the sunlight was blinding as I squealed with delight. My dad had just lifted me high above a crashing wave. In that moment, he was the center of everything. He was my protector, my safety, my joy.
I did not know how my dad would do it, but I knew he would. As his daughter I trusted him – his strength, his love, his timing. I looked to him and in one smooth motion he raised me above the threat with perfect timing.
Just as my father stood like a strong tower and shielded me from a force too strong for me to withstand, God is our ever-present refuge.
“God is our refuge and strength, a helper who is always found in times of trouble.” (Psalm 46:1)
As you seek refuge in God, centering your heart and life on Jesus, you are protected. You do this by relying upon His character and love for you even as you feel waves crashing around you.
Proverbs 18:10 says the righteous are “protected,” but in the original Hebrew, the word carries a deeper meaning. It means exalted – lifted up, set out of the reach of danger. It is not just about hiding; it is about being raised above the threat.
Jesus was lifted up on a cross for you. And because of Him, you are lifted up too.
“He also raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavens in Christ Jesus…” (Ephesians 2:6)
Jesus knew the waves of torture, humiliation, and death were coming. He knew His closest friends would deceive, deny, and doubt Him. Yet, He trusted His Father. Jesus rested in His Father’s power, faithful love, and perfect timing to lift Him above His enemies. (John 13)
That same Father, your Heavenly Father, is lifting you too. Jesus has already taken the crushing wave. Now, you are secure in Him. Today may the Holy Spirit fill you with the joy of victory as you run to Him. Let your Heavenly Father lift you above fear, above uncertainty, above the threat.
Your Turn:
1. What feels threatening to you today? Run to the Lord in prayer. Ask Him to lift you above it to help you see from His perspective and to trust His perfect timing. (Ecclesiastes 3:1, 1 Timothy 6:15)
2. How have you seen the Lord’s character and care for you in the past? Reflect on the ways He has protected and provided for you.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for lifting me above what is threatening. You are my helper, my strong tower, who is always found in times of trouble. Thank You, Jesus. Amen.
