Day 5 - SL 40 Days

April 24, 2026

Day 5:

1 Timothy 5:18: For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain,” and, “The laborer deserves his wages.”

Devotion:

Paul in his letter to Timothy makes an interesting statement. Timothy, a young church leader, is being told by Paul, “for the Scripture says.” Paul is writing in such a way that he assumes Timothy knows what he is talking about and then goes on to quote Deuteronomy in the Old Testament and Luke in the New Testament. This shows that the message was already written, in circulation, and accepted within the mid 50’s (Timothy was written in the mid 50’s). This shows that at least the Gospels were written early, within the lifetime and ministry of Jesus and the eyewitnesses (Jesus was crucified around AD 30-33).

Questions:

  1. Because we know that our picture of Jesus was written early, how does this effect your faith that what was written was not a result of myth?
  2. Timothy was very young for his position in the church and is a great example of how your age doesn’t limit God’s ability to use you. Ask God to use you in a big way today, maybe even ask God to move you outside of your comfort zone to make an impact for His Kingdom.
  3. What’s one area of your life where you feel like you limit yourself because your too young? Ask God to help you see yourself the way He sees you.
