No Fear in Love

Scripture:

“There is no fear in love.” (1 John 4:18)

Reading:

“Dad, I need to tell you something.”

We recently celebrated Father’s Day. My kids happily encircled their dad for our family photo. Their nearness to him and their shining smiles weren’t an exaggeration. They adore their dad.

One of the most inspiring aspects of my husband’s fatherhood is the way our kids come to him when they are burdened by sin. He listens, and somehow the weight becomes lighter simply because it has been shared with him.

I can’t help but see a reflection of God’s love for His children in the way these moments have unfolded in our imperfect family.

“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:8-9)

Our sin can feel so shameful, even to ourselves, that we often curl around it in an attempt to keep it hidden. What we don’t see is that secret sin slowly eats us alive (Psalm 32).

Yet, in His mercy, God the Father invites us to unburden ourselves by telling Him about our rebellion. Not because He doesn’t already know it, but because He longs for His children to stop hiding and experience the fellowship, freedom, and cleansing that come from living honestly before Him (1 John 1:3-9).

Do you realize that your Heavenly Father loves you and still likes you when you do wrong?

Fear tempts us to hide from Him, as though we could somehow escape His gaze. Yet there is nothing you can do to jeopardize God’s love for you.

The truth is that God has already dealt with your sin through the sacrifice of His Son. Justice was satisfied at the cross, so those who belong to Christ no longer need to fear condemnation.

“This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.” (1 John 4:17-18)

Is there something you’ve been carrying alone? Like a child approaching a trusted father, you can come near to God with whatever burdens your heart. His forgiveness and purifying power are waiting for you, and His perfect love is stronger than your fear.

1. Shame, fear, and guilt often reveal the degree to which we’ve allowed God’s truth to shape our perspective. Do you allow these emotions to keep you from telling the Lord about the sin in your life?

2. How do 1 John 1:8–9 and 1 John 4:17–18 address those emotions?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, I have something to tell You. As I talk to You about my sin, I welcome Your perfect love to drive out my fear of punishment. … Please forgive me and purify me from all unrighteousness. Amen.
