Tasting the Truth of Scripture

April 23, 2026

Kristin Fields

Scripture:

“…since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;” (1 Peter 1:23)

Reading:

When someone asks why I trust the Bible, my first thoughts aren’t about the historical proofs or the academic scrutiny it has withstood. Those are readily available to anyone willing to look. What comes to mind first is the steady evidence of transformed lives, including my own.

That truth became deeply personal to me when I read, “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” (Psalm 34:8) Those oddly paired words, taste and see, leapt off the page and settled in my heart. As I began to read Scripture regularly, I realized I was experiencing exactly what they described. I was not just learning about God but tasting and seeing His work in my life through the power of His Word.

It is a principle of life that whatever we focus on shapes us. Just consider the influence of social media and the news. The same is true of Scripture, but unlike anything else, it is the Word of God. His life-giving Word works within us and reaches into the lives of others, guiding us toward wholeness.

The Holy Spirit meets us personally in Scripture when we come seeking truth and open to God. The more we engage with His Word - bringing our questions and seeking to know for ourselves - the more He reveals who He is and lights our path. As Psalm 119:105 reminds us, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

Like an imperishable seed, as Scripture is planted in open hearts, it takes root and grows in ways that do not fade or disappear. This is what Peter describes as a life born again through the gospel, flourishing according to God’s ways.

“…since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;” (1 Peter 1:23)

It is the Word of God, “living and active” (Hebrews 4:12). It speaks honestly to our fears and hopes, our failures and forgiveness, life and death. It reveals who God is as our all-powerful Creator, all-loving Father, and how we can know our all-present Savior.

We are designed for an abundant life with God, here and now, through faith in Jesus Christ. His Word reveals this path, full of living hope, guiding us beyond this earth-bound life and into what lies ahead.

Simply, the Bible proves true in real life.

The Bible yields the Lord’s wisdom, peace, and direction - abundant life. Taste and see for yourself. Feast and savor it. It is God’s Word to you.

Your Turn:

1. What has most shaped the way you live and think right now? How is Scripture different from other influences?

2. Because God’s Word is like “imperishable seed” (1 Peter 1:23), what kinds of “soil” (attitudes, distractions, habits) might make it harder or easier for it to grow in your life?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You that I have access to Your divine Word. Please stir my hunger for it and open the Scriptures to me. Grant me understanding with an obedient heart (Luke 24:45). I want Your Word to flourish in my life and ripple into the lives of others for Your glory and our blessing. Amen.
